News: Bob Brown Bailed Out of Bill

Digg this

After being handed a legal bill that would have sent him bankrupt, Senator Bob Brown will be able to pay his debt after donations from an “overwhelming public response” by the public to his plight.

Forestry Tasmania sent Senator Brown a bill for legal costs totalling $240,000 after the Federal Court overturned a decision made by Justice Marshall that “logging of Wielangta Forest should stop because it threatened endangered species like the Swift Parrot, Tasmanian Wedge-tailed Eagle and the Wielangta Stag Beetle.”

Mr. Brown today sent an email to Greens supporters saying that enough money had been donated for him to be “able to pay the bill by the deadline” of the 29 June 2009. The bill would have sent the Greens party Senator bankrupt and out of the Senate if it were not for the donations from “more than a thousand Australians from across the country”, including a considerable figure from Dick Smith.
